Yet, despite their importance, access to formal credit remains limited. According to figures cited in the interview, small enterprises receive less than 1% of total bank lending in Nigeria.

Dozie believes the problem is not necessarily that these businesses lack the ability to repay loans, but that financial institutions often lack sufficient information to assess their financial health.

Traditional banks typically require property, audited financial statements and other forms of security before approving business loans. However, many small businesses operate without formal accounting systems or valuable assets that can satisfy these requirements.

For Dozie, digital transaction records offer another way to establish credibility.

“Every small business generates data. Every transaction is data,” he explained, arguing that lenders can examine business cash flows, payment histories and customer transactions to determine creditworthiness.

Through this approach, financial institutions could evaluate businesses based on their actual economic activities rather than relying exclusively on physical collateral.

Sparkle is positioning digital banking services and business support tools as part of this transformation. The platform provides services designed to help businesses manage financial activities, including payments, payroll and invoicing.

These activities generate valuable information that can help financial institutions understand how businesses operate, identify revenue patterns and make more informed lending decisions.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning could further strengthen this process by analysing transaction histories and identifying relationships between business payments, customer behaviour and market conditions.

According to Dozie, these technologies can improve lending decisions, reduce operational costs and potentially make borrowing more affordable for small businesses.

However, the opportunity extends beyond technology. Financial institutions must also reconsider how they measure financial inclusion. Opening bank accounts alone does not guarantee that individuals and businesses can access productive financial services.

For Nigeria’s SME sector, improved access to credit could support inventory purchases, business expansion, equipment acquisition and job creation.

Nevertheless, data-driven lending requires responsible data collection, customer consent, strong privacy protections and reliable credit assessment systems. Transaction history should complement, rather than automatically replace, proper risk evaluation.

Dozie’s argument highlights an important shift in African financial services: businesses should not be excluded from financing simply because they lack conventional assets.

As digital payments expand, the next opportunity for Nigerian fintechs and banks is to convert everyday business transactions into useful financial intelligence.

Recognising data as a form of collateral could help close Nigeria’s SME financing gap and direct more capital towards businesses that drive economic growth.

Nigeria’s small businesses could gain better access to financing if banks begin treating business transaction data as an alternative to traditional collateral, according to Uzoma Dozie, Chief Executive Officer of Sparkle Microfinance Bank.
