Digital Africa Global Consult (DAGC), a leading tech consultancy, has partnered with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) to launch the “Nigeria Data Challenge” — a nationwide initiative aimed at boosting data literacy, innovation, and awareness about data protection in Nigeria.
The initiative comes at a time when Nigeria is advancing its digital transformation agenda and emphasizing the importance of data privacy, security, and ethical data use. The partnership reflects a shared commitment by both organizations to build a data-conscious society and foster a culture of responsible data handling among citizens, businesses, and institutions.
The Nigeria Data Challenge is designed as a competitive and educational program, targeting students, young professionals, startups, and researchers. It seeks to inspire innovative solutions to real-world problems using data. The challenge encourages participants to explore areas such as data privacy, protection, governance, and the ethical use of personal data while developing practical applications that align with Nigeria’s data protection regulations.
Key highlights of the initiative include capacity-building workshops, mentorship sessions, hackathons, and a national competition that will culminate in the presentation of awards and grants to outstanding teams. Through this multi-phase approach, the program aims to equip participants with the technical skills and legal understanding necessary for working with data in compliance with national and international standards.
Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the NDPC, emphasized that the collaboration is in line with the Commission’s strategic objectives of promoting data protection awareness and strengthening Nigeria’s data ecosystem. He praised the Nigeria Data Challenge for its innovative approach in involving youth and technology enthusiasts in solving pressing issues related to data ethics and privacy.
Similarly, the CEO of Digital Africa Global Consult, Okey Uzoechi, highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for young Nigerians to engage with the digital economy. He noted that the initiative will not only spark creativity and innovation but also drive socio-economic development by nurturing data-driven entrepreneurship.
By combining technical education, policy awareness, and practical challenges, the initiative seeks to bridge the knowledge gap in data governance and ensure that Nigeria remains competitive in the global digital landscape. It also aligns with the broader goals of the Nigeria Data Protection Act and the government’s vision for a digitally inclusive and secure society.
The launch of the Nigeria Data Challenge marks a milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward becoming a data-responsible nation. It signifies a collaborative effort between government and private sector stakeholders to empower a new generation of data-savvy Nigerians capable of shaping the country’s digital future.
Applications for the Nigeria Data Challenge are expected to open soon, with updates and details to be made available on the official platforms of DAGC and the NDPC.
