Guinea and Sierra Leone have taken a major step toward enhancing regional digital connectivity by signing a landmark agreement to interconnect their national fibre optic networks. This historic partnership aims to bolster digital infrastructure, improve internet access, and foster economic growth across both countries and the wider West African region.
The agreement was signed under the auspices of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and is part of the broader West Africa Regional Communications Infrastructure Program (WARCIP), an initiative supported by the World Bank. WARCIP seeks to bridge connectivity gaps among West African nations, promoting regional integration and socio-economic development through improved broadband access.
Under the terms of the agreement, fibre optic cables from both Guinea and Sierra Leone will be physically linked at the border town of Pamelap. This interconnection is expected to significantly reduce internet costs, enhance speed and reliability, and provide backup routes to prevent service disruptions. By joining forces, the two nations aim to create a more resilient and integrated digital ecosystem that benefits citizens, businesses, and public institutions.
Officials from both countries lauded the agreement as a testament to their commitment to regional cooperation. Guinea’s Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Digital Economy, Ousmane Gaoual Diallo, emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving digital transformation and expressed hope that the initiative would serve as a model for other nations. Similarly, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, highlighted the role of digital infrastructure in driving economic growth and social inclusion.
The interconnection is also seen as a crucial step in supporting cross-border services such as e-commerce, digital education, health care, and government services. With improved connectivity, both countries expect to see increased foreign investment and innovation in the digital sector.
In addition to the infrastructure benefits, the agreement reinforces the commitment of Guinea and Sierra Leone to the ECOWAS vision of a digitally connected and economically integrated West Africa. The move is aligned with broader goals such as the African Union’s Digital Transformation Strategy and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
The fibre optic interconnection marks a significant milestone in the digital evolution of West Africa, strengthening ties between Guinea and Sierra Leone while paving the way for broader regional collaboration.
