The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has launched a mobile application aimed at tackling the persistent problem of engineering quackery in Nigeria. This initiative marks a significant step toward promoting professionalism, enhancing accountability, and safeguarding public safety within the engineering sector.
Engineering quackery—the practice of engineering by unqualified individuals—has long plagued the industry in Nigeria, leading to substandard projects, infrastructural failures, building collapses, and loss of lives and investments. Recognizing the urgent need to address this issue, the NSE developed and launched a dedicated app that allows the public, clients, employers, and regulators to verify the professional status of engineers and firms engaged in engineering services across the country.
The app, named “NSE Verify,” provides a real-time platform for checking the credentials of engineers registered with the NSE and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). It is designed to ensure transparency and help users differentiate between certified professionals and imposters. By simply inputting an engineer’s registration number or name, users can instantly confirm whether the individual is licensed to practice. This tool is expected to reduce the prevalence of fraudulent engineering practices and encourage compliance with industry standards.
During the launch event, NSE President Engr. Tasiu Sa’ad Gidari-Wudil emphasized the critical importance of protecting the integrity of the engineering profession. He stated that the app would not only aid in the identification of qualified professionals but also foster public trust in engineering services. Gidari-Wudil noted that the society has been working collaboratively with COREN and other stakeholders to create sustainable mechanisms that ensure only certified engineers operate within Nigeria.
The NSE also hopes that the app will promote self-regulation among engineers. By knowing that their qualifications can be easily verified, engineers are expected to maintain high ethical and professional standards. Furthermore, the app includes features that allow users to report suspected cases of quackery or unethical practices directly to the NSE for investigation and necessary action.
In addition to tackling quackery, the app is part of a broader digital transformation strategy by the NSE. It aims to modernize engineering practice in Nigeria and make it more transparent and efficient. The app is user-friendly and accessible on both Android and iOS platforms, ensuring widespread reach and usability across different demographics.
