In a strategic move to strengthen South-South cooperation and foster global partnerships, Nigeria has commenced the deployment of technical experts to countries in the Eastern Caribbean. This initiative is part of the Nigeria-United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) South-South Cooperation initiative, aimed at sharing Nigeria’s technical expertise with other developing countries in mutually beneficial ways.
The first group of Nigerian professionals has been sent to Saint Lucia, one of the participating Caribbean nations. These experts, drawn from various sectors such as agriculture, education, renewable energy, ICT, and health, are expected to support local development efforts in their host countries by offering technical assistance, capacity building, and knowledge transfer. The deployment aligns with the broader objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in reducing inequality and promoting partnerships for development.
The collaboration between Nigeria and the UNDP seeks to harness Nigeria’s rich pool of skilled professionals to help address development challenges in the Caribbean. It also reflects a growing recognition of the importance of peer learning and solidarity among developing nations in the Global South. By exporting expertise instead of just receiving aid, Nigeria is positioning itself as a key player in global development discourse.
The deployment process was formally launched during a flag-off ceremony attended by key Nigerian government officials, UNDP representatives, and delegates from Caribbean nations. Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted the importance of African-Caribbean relations, emphasizing shared historical ties and the need for deeper collaboration in economic, educational, and technical domains.
UNDP officials lauded Nigeria’s commitment to the South-South initiative, noting that the project not only benefits the Caribbean but also allows Nigerian experts to gain international experience and exposure. The technical support is expected to create a ripple effect, strengthening institutional frameworks in the Caribbean while also enriching Nigeria’s own human capital base.
This initiative also comes at a time when Caribbean nations are grappling with development issues, climate change impacts, and the need for specialized knowledge in emerging fields. The Nigerian experts will work in partnership with local institutions to co-create solutions, rather than imposing external models, in keeping with the principles of equitable and respectful development cooperation.
