Nigeria’s digital awareness programme has gained international recognition by winning a top global award for its outstanding contribution to digital literacy and inclusion. Spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, the initiative is part of a broader national strategy to empower citizens with essential digital skills, promote innovation, and bridge the digital divide across the country.
The award was presented by the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), an international platform coordinated by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which celebrates transformative projects that harness the power of technology for development. Nigeria’s winning project—the National Digital Literacy Framework(NDLF) was selected among hundreds of entries worldwide for its impact, scalability, and alignment with global digital development goals.
The NDLF is designed to equip at least 95% of Nigerians with basic digital literacy skills by 2030. Through strategic partnerships with private sector stakeholders, civil society, and educational institutions, the programme has already reached millions of Nigerians, especially in underserved communities. It offers a wide range of training in areas such as computer basics, internet use, cybersecurity awareness, and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, expressed pride in the international recognition, highlighting that the award validates Nigeria’s commitment to digital transformation and inclusion. He emphasized the importance of empowering citizens with the skills needed to participate in a modern, knowledge-driven economy.
The programme has also focused on youth and women empowerment, recognizing them as key drivers of digital innovation. Initiatives such as community tech hubs, school-based training programmes, and online learning platforms have played a critical role in extending the programme’s reach and impact.
This achievement signals Nigeria’s growing leadership in digital development on the African continent and the global stage. It also aligns with the government’s long-term vision of building a digitally inclusive society, fostering innovation, creating jobs, and accelerating economic growth through technology.
The global recognition of Nigeria’s digital awareness programme is not only a milestone for the country but also a beacon of hope for other developing nations seeking to harness digital tools for inclusive growth.
