The Federal Government of Nigeria has entered into a strategic partnership with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) aimed at training seven million Nigerian youths in digital skills. This collaboration is a part of the Renewed Hope Agenda led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which focuses on enhancing the digital economy and reducing unemployment among Nigerian youth.
The deal was sealed through the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) under the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, in collaboration with the UAE’s Galaxy Backbone and the private tech company, Ascend Digital Solutions. The initiative seeks to equip millions of Nigerian youths with skills in various areas of technology including software development, data analysis, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, cloud computing, and other digital competencies that are essential in today’s global economy.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, emphasized that this partnership aligns with the federal government’s goal of creating jobs and preparing the workforce for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. He noted that the training program will be executed through both online and in-person methods to ensure broad accessibility and impact.
The United Arab Emirates is recognized for its significant investments in technology and innovation, and this collaboration is seen as a transfer of expertise that will benefit Nigeria’s fast-growing tech ecosystem. Ascend Digital, with a strong presence in both countries, will play a pivotal role in delivering training modules, tools, and certification programs in conjunction with Nigerian tech institutions.
One of the key goals of the project is not only to provide skills but also to link participants with employment opportunities both locally and internationally. The initiative will also support Nigeria’s ambition to become a global outsourcing hub by boosting the technical competence of its young population.
The initiative is expected to roll out in phases over the next few years, starting with pilot states before expanding nationwide. The government aims to ensure inclusivity by targeting youths from various socioeconomic backgrounds, particularly those in underserved and rural communities.
This ambitious training project represents a major step toward bridging Nigeria’s digital divide, enhancing its human capital development, and positioning the country as a leading player in Africa’s digital economy.
