Tanzania Launches Ambitious Plan to Bridge Digital Divide and Boost Economic Development.

Presenting the plan, TTCL Director General Moremi Marwa stated that the new strategy is designed to improve citizens’ quality of life through reliable, modern, and inclusive digital communication services.

The Government of Tanzania has launched an ambitious three-year strategy aimed at enhancing digital inclusion and accelerating national development. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Information, Communication, and Information Technology, the strategy focuses on expanding digital infrastructure, increasing internet access, and empowering citizens through digital skills training. This initiative is part of Tanzania’s broader digital transformation agenda, aligned with Vision 2025 and the African Union’s Digital Transformation Strategy.

Key components of the strategy include increasing broadband coverage, reducing the cost of internet, and promoting investment in ICT infrastructure. The government aims to ensure that rural and underserved communities gain equal access to digital tools and services. Plans are underway to roll out more public Wi-Fi zones, expand the national fiber optic network, and encourage private sector partnerships.

Digital literacy is another core focus. The strategy outlines measures to integrate ICT training in schools, provide community-based digital skills workshops, and support youth innovation hubs. These efforts aim to prepare citizens for a digital economy and bridge the urban-rural digital divide.

To support the private sector and startups, the government will simplify regulations, improve cybersecurity frameworks, and promote e-commerce and digital financial services. Special attention will be given to supporting women, youth, and persons with disabilities to participate fully in the digital ecosystem.

The strategy also emphasizes data-driven governance, encouraging the adoption of digital platforms in public service delivery to enhance transparency and efficiency.

Overall, Tanzania’s new strategy seeks to position the country as a regional digital leader, drive inclusive growth, and empower its citizens through technology. The government projects that the strategy will create jobs, stimulate innovation, and boost economic resilience in an increasingly digital global economy.
