Nigeria Unveils Unified Web Design System to Modernize Government Digital Services.

The NWDS Project, led by the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, is part of a bigger effort to make government websites easier to use, more consistent, and better aligned with the needs of everyday Nigerians.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a National Web Design System (NWDS) to standardize the design and development of all government websites. Spearheaded by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, the project aims to create a unified digital identity for government entities and enhance user experience, accessibility, and security.

The NWDS is intended to address the inconsistency, poor user interface, and outdated design features common across many Nigerian government websites. By establishing a centralized design framework, the project seeks to ensure uniformity in layout, branding, navigation, and responsiveness across devices. It will also promote efficiency, transparency, and trust in digital public services.

The system is built to reflect modern design standards, featuring mobile responsiveness, accessibility for persons with disabilities, multilingual support, and faster loading times. It includes reusable design components, templates, and tools that agencies can adapt to their specific needs while maintaining compliance with national standards.

Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, emphasized that the initiative is a critical step towards achieving a digitally inclusive and citizen-centric public service. He stated that by improving the digital presence of government agencies, the project will foster greater public engagement and streamline access to vital information and services.

Kashifu Inuwa, Director-General of NITDA, noted that the web design project aligns with Nigeria’s National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (2020–2030), which aims to modernize public service delivery through digital transformation.

The NWDS will be available to all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), ensuring a consistent and professional web presence across government platforms. This move is expected to significantly improve the perception and functionality of government digital services, enhance cybersecurity, and support Nigeria’s broader digital economy goals.
