East Africa Strengthens Digital Integration with Launch of Uganda-Based Data Hub.

Tanzania’s Minister of Information, Communication, and Information Technology, Nape Nnauye, has officially commissioned a new data center in Uganda, marking a significant step in strengthening digital and economic ties between the two East African nations. The facility, located in Kampala, is part of a broader initiative to enhance regional ICT infrastructure and promote cross-border cooperation in digital services.

During the commissioning, Nnauye emphasized the importance of shared digital infrastructure in accelerating economic integration across the East African Community (EAC). He noted that the data center would support cloud services, cybersecurity, e-governance, and digital innovations, benefitting businesses, governments, and citizens in both countries.

The project is a collaboration between public and private sector stakeholders and aligns with the African Union’s digital transformation strategy. It also reflects the growing recognition of data sovereignty and local data hosting in improving service delivery and regional competitiveness.

Uganda’s ICT Minister, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, welcomed the partnership, stating that it highlights the power of regional collaboration in building a resilient digital economy. Both ministers pledged continued cooperation in developing ICT infrastructure to drive inclusive growth and digital connectivity across East Africa. The data center is expected to play a key role in achieving this vision.
