“Tinubu Urges Youth to Harness Social Media for National Unity”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerian youth to use social media as a tool for nation-building rather than division. Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 2024 Democracy Day lecture in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized that social media should be employed to promote unity, foster development, and strengthen democracy, not to spread misinformation, incite conflict, or fuel disintegration.

He acknowledged the power and influence of the youth, describing them as the nation’s most valuable asset and critical to Nigeria’s future. Tinubu encouraged young people to embrace patriotism and take responsibility for shaping a better society, urging them to be architects of hope and change instead of propagators of negativity. He challenged them to use their talents and online platforms to contribute positively to national discourse, engage in constructive debates, and support policies that promote peace, justice, and progress.

Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to deepening democratic governance, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring freedom of speech. However, he cautioned that such freedoms must come with a sense of responsibility.

The President praised Nigeria’s democratic journey over the past 25 years, highlighting significant achievements while acknowledging ongoing challenges. He called for collective action and mutual understanding across all sectors and demographics to tackle insecurity, economic hardship, and political instability.

Delivering a lecture titled “25 Years of Enduring Democracy: Prospects for the Future”, Professor Ayo Atsenuwa of the University of Lagos echoed the President’s sentiments, stressing the need for civic responsibility and active participation in governance. She noted that democracy is a shared commitment that requires everyone’s involvement, especially the youth, who must be encouraged and empowered to engage meaningfully in national development.

Overall, the message from Tinubu was clear: young Nigerians must rise above cynicism and division, using their voices and digital power to unite and build a stronger, more democratic Nigeria.
