NEPC Advocates Digital Tools to Boost Nigerian SMEs’ Global Competitiveness

Nigeria to embrace digital marketing as a key tool to expand their presence in the global market. According to the Council, the increasing role of technology in international commerce makes online platforms a powerful and cost-effective means for businesses to connect with buyers beyond national borders.

Speaking at a recent sensitization workshop, NEPC officials highlighted that many Nigerian SMEs struggle to penetrate export markets due to limited awareness, inadequate marketing strategies, and reliance on traditional trade promotion methods. Digital marketing — through websites, e-commerce platforms, search engine optimization (SEO), social media, and targeted online advertising — offers a way to overcome these barriers.

The Council noted that global trade is increasingly being shaped by online interactions, with buyers seeking suppliers through digital channels. SMEs that fail to adopt these tools risk being excluded from lucrative export opportunities. NEPC emphasized that digital platforms can help Nigerian exporters showcase their products, tell their brand stories, receive direct inquiries from foreign buyers, and build trust through consistent online engagement.

To support this transition, NEPC pledged to continue organizing capacity-building programme that train SMEs in online branding, content creation, market research, and customer engagement strategies. The agency also encouraged SMEs to explore partnerships with established e-commerce sites and digital service providers, while ensuring product quality, proper packaging, and compliance with international standards.

By leveraging digital marketing, NEPC believes Nigerian SMEs can expand their customer base, reduce marketing costs, and remain competitive in an increasingly digital global economy. The Council concluded that embracing technology is no longer optional for exporters but a critical survival and growth strategy in today’s interconnected trade environment.
