Kenya and UK Partner to Boost Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The initiative aims to make all academic and research institutions more entrepreneurial, with support from partners like the British Council and The RISA Fund.

Kenya is stepping up its digital innovation efforts through a strategic collaboration between the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) and the British Council. This partnership is designed to strengthen Kenya’s innovation ecosystem, foster entrepreneurship, and enhance the country’s capacity to participate competitively in the global digital economy.

KeNIA, a government agency under the Ministry of Education, plays a central role in coordinating, promoting, and strengthening the innovation landscape in Kenya. The British Council brings international expertise, networks, and resources to support skills development, creative enterprise, and cross-border collaboration. Together, they aim to address key gaps in innovation infrastructure, policy, and talent development.

The alliance will focus on building innovation capacity among young people, researchers, and startups through training, mentorship, and funding opportunities. It will also facilitate stronger linkages between academia, industry, and government to ensure innovations move effectively from research to market. Creative and digital industries will receive particular attention, recognizing their growing role in driving economic diversification and job creation.

By connecting Kenyan innovators to global networks, the partnership will enable knowledge exchange, open new markets, and promote cultural collaboration. The initiative aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the country’s goal of becoming a regional technology hub.

Ultimately, the KeNIA–British Council alliance represents a commitment to nurturing a dynamic innovation ecosystem that supports home-grown solutions to local and global challenges. It reflects Kenya’s recognition that digital innovation is not only a driver of economic growth but also a tool for social transformation, equipping communities with the skills, resources, and opportunities needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
