Galaxy Backbone (GBB), the federal government’s information technology and shared services provider, has unveiled a four-year strategic plan aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s digital transformation. The initiative focuses on expanding the country’s digital infrastructure, enhancing cybersecurity, and improving access to e-government services for citizens and businesses.
The plan outlines a roadmap for integrating digital technologies across public sector operations to improve efficiency, transparency, and service delivery. It prioritizes building a robust, secure national information and communications technology (ICT) backbone to support cloud computing, data hosting, and digital platforms.
Key objectives include upgrading broadband infrastructure to connect more government agencies nationwide, expanding the National Shared Services Centre, and strengthening Nigeria’s Tier III data centre capacity. The strategy also emphasizes adopting international best practices in cybersecurity to protect sensitive government data and ensure service continuity.
GBB intends to work closely with the private sector, development partners, and international technology firms to leverage expertise and investment. Training and capacity-building programs for public servants will be implemented to ensure effective use of digital tools and systems.
The rollout aligns with Nigeria’s National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, supporting goals such as job creation, digital inclusion, and economic diversification. By integrating systems and standardizing processes across ministries, departments, and agencies, the plan aims to reduce duplication, cut costs, and provide citizens with more seamless access to government services.
GBB’s Managing Director, Professor Muhammad Bello Abubakar, stressed that the initiative is a critical step toward positioning Nigeria as a competitive digital economy. Over the next four years, GBB will measure progress through defined milestones, aiming to deliver a more connected, efficient, and secure digital environment for governance and socio-economic growth.
