In the first half of 2025, Nigeria recorded close to 6.5 million cyber threats, according to cybersecurity firm Kaspersky. This figure highlights the growing scale of digital risks facing individuals, businesses, and institutions in the country. The surge reflects both the rising sophistication of cybercriminals and Nigeria’s increasing integration into the global digital economy.
Kaspersky’s data reveals that Nigeria remains a prime target for malicious actors due to its expanding internet user base, vibrant financial sector, and rapid adoption of digital technologies. The majority of threats identified involved malware attacks, phishing schemes, and attempts to exploit software vulnerabilities. Financially motivated attacks were particularly prominent, with cybercriminals targeting online banking systems, mobile payment platforms, and e-commerce services widely used by Nigerians.
The report emphasizes the persistence of phishing, often disguised as emails, fake websites, or social media messages impersonating trusted organizations. These scams typically aim to steal credentials, financial data, or personal information. Mobile threats are also increasing, driven by Nigeria’s high reliance on smartphones for banking, shopping, and communication. Malicious apps and SMS-based scams continue to put users at risk.
Kaspersky notes that cybercriminals are increasingly turning to advanced tools such as ransomware and botnets. Ransomware, which locks users out of their data until payment is made, is becoming a serious challenge for Nigerian businesses, while botnets are being used to launch coordinated attacks against networks and infrastructure.
Experts warn that the frequency and complexity of cyberattacks will likely grow as digital adoption deepens. They stress the need for individuals to adopt stronger security practices, such as updating software, using multi-factor authentication, and being cautious of suspicious links. For organizations, investments in cybersecurity infrastructure, employee training, and incident response systems are critical.
Kaspersky also underscores the importance of collaboration between governments, private sector players, and international partners to strengthen Nigeria’s cybersecurity posture. Public awareness campaigns, stricter enforcement of cybercrime laws, and capacity building among law enforcement are key to curbing the threat.
With cybercriminals constantly innovating, the report concludes that proactive and adaptive security strategies are essential if Nigeria is to protect its digital assets and safeguard citizens against the growing wave of cyber risks.
