Equatys: Space42 and Viasat’s Global D2D and 5G Satellite Collaboration

Space42, a fast-growing satellite operator, has partnered with U.S.-based Viasat to launch Equatys, a new joint venture aimed at transforming global satellite communications. The initiative focuses on advancing direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity and 5G integration, targeting underserved regions where traditional terrestrial networks face limitations.

Equatys will leverage Viasat’s expertise in high-capacity satellite systems and Space42’s agile deployment model across emerging markets. The partnership is designed to bridge the digital divide by enabling reliable broadband access on standard smartphones and IoT devices without requiring specialized satellite hardware. By integrating with existing 5G infrastructure, the venture plans to extend mobile coverage beyond the reach of cell towers, offering seamless connectivity across remote, rural, and maritime regions.

The joint venture aims to capitalize on the rising demand for ubiquitous, low-latency, and resilient communications. With satellite-enabled D2D services, Equatys is positioning itself as a disruptive alternative to traditional network rollouts, significantly reducing costs and deployment time for mobile operators. This will also support enterprises and governments in areas such as logistics, agriculture, disaster response, and defense.

Equatys is also aligned with the broader global push for non-terrestrial networks (NTNs), as defined by 3GPP standards, ensuring compatibility with next-generation 5G and 6G ecosystems. Its architecture is expected to combine geostationary satellites for capacity with low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites for low latency, creating a hybrid solution optimized for mass adoption.

By blending Viasat’s technological leadership and Space42’s regional market access, Equatys aspires to become a cornerstone in the satellite-to-smartphone revolution. This venture signals a strategic move toward a truly interconnected planet, where connectivity is available anywhere, anytime, on any device.
