OceanHub Africa, in partnership with The Coca-Cola Foundation, has launched a $120,000 Pan-African call for bold, innovative solutions aimed at accelerating plastic circularity across the continent. The initiative seeks to empower entrepreneurs, startups, and changemakers working to tackle Africa’s growing plastic waste challenge through scalable and sustainable business models.
Plastic pollution remains one of Africa’s most pressing environmental issues, with rapid urbanisation, rising consumption, and limited waste management infrastructure contributing to mounting waste streams. Yet the challenge also presents a significant economic opportunity. Circular economy solutions—focused on reuse, recycling, redesign, and waste reduction—have the potential to create jobs, unlock new value chains, and reduce environmental damage.
The $120,000 funding pool will support selected ventures developing practical, high-impact approaches to plastic circularity. This includes innovations in collection systems, recycling technologies, product redesign, alternative materials, and community-driven waste management models. By targeting early- and growth-stage enterprises, the program aims to bridge funding gaps that often limit promising environmental startups from scaling their solutions.
OceanHub Africa, known for supporting ocean-impact entrepreneurs, will provide more than just financial backing. Selected participants are expected to benefit from mentorship, technical support, and access to a broader ecosystem of partners and investors. This hands-on support is designed to help founders refine their business models, measure environmental impact, and position themselves for long-term sustainability.
The Coca-Cola Foundation’s involvement reflects increasing corporate interest in advancing circular packaging systems and reducing plastic waste footprints. Through strategic partnerships, the Foundation continues to support initiatives that align environmental responsibility with economic inclusion, particularly in emerging markets.
Importantly, the call for bold ideas emphasises localised solutions. Africa’s waste management challenges vary widely across regions, requiring context-specific approaches rather than imported models. By focusing on African-led innovation, the initiative aims to ensure solutions are both culturally relevant and commercially viable.
As conversations around climate action and sustainability intensify globally, initiatives like this signal a growing recognition that environmental resilience and economic development can go hand in hand. By backing entrepreneurs at the forefront of plastic circularity, OceanHub Africa and The Coca-Cola Foundation are helping to catalyse a new generation of climate-conscious businesses—turning waste into opportunity across the continent.
