Lagos Ride‑Hailing Drivers Threaten to Abandon Uber, Bolt, and inDrive Amid Strike.

Uber, Bolt, and inDrive are facing rising unrest from their driver partners in Lagos, as a coordinated strike entered its third day with no official response from the platforms. Drivers under the Amalgamated Union of App‑Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) have not only protested low earnings and high operating costs, but have now threatened to dump global apps in favour of local alternatives.

The industrial action began earlier this month when drivers launched a three‑day shutdown over what they describe as unsustainable fares, rising petrol prices, and steep commission charges that erode their take‑home income. With earnings squeezed and cost pressures rising, drivers feel they can no longer depend on the status quo.

The cause of the standoff is straightforward: many drivers say that the current pricing and commission structures offered by Uber, Bolt, and inDrive leave them with little profit after fuel, maintenance, and platform fees. They say repeated appeals for adjustments have gone unanswered, driving them to consider alternatives.

For Africa’s broader tech and transport ecosystem, this moment highlights a growing tension between global tech platforms and local service providers. With drivers threatening to switch to indigenous apps, the strike is pushing stakeholders to rethink how ride‑hailing services can be more sustainable and locally driven — rather than dominated by externally developed pricing models.

The way forward will require dialogue and innovation. Drivers want fairer revenue share and pricing that reflects local costs. Meanwhile, the ride‑hailing companies may need to reassess their commission models or partner more deeply with local tech startups that understand the Lagos market. There’s also a renewed push among drivers to develop homegrown ride‑hailing alternatives — a move that could reshape the industry if momentum continues.
