Netflix Co-Founder Reed Hastings to Exit Board After Nearly 30 Years.

Reed Hastings is set to step down from the board of Netflix in June 2026, marking the end of nearly three decades of direct involvement with the streaming giant he co-founded in 1997.

The company confirmed that Hastings will not seek re-election when his current board term expires at the next annual shareholders meeting. His exit follows a gradual transition away from executive leadership, beginning in 2023 when he stepped down as co-chief executive officer, before continuing in a board-level leadership role.

Hastings co-founded Netflix as a DVD-by-mail rental service and played a central role in its transformation into one of the world’s largest streaming platforms. Under his leadership, the company pioneered the subscription streaming model, reshaping global entertainment consumption and accelerating the decline of traditional broadcast and rental distribution systems.

The decision to leave the board has been described as part of a planned transition rather than a reaction to internal issues or performance concerns. Hastings is expected to focus more on philanthropic work and personal initiatives after his departure, while Netflix continues to expand into areas such as advertising-supported streaming, gaming, and live content.

His exit represents a symbolic milestone for Netflix, as the company fully consolidates its post-founder leadership era. With Hastings stepping away completely from governance, Netflix now moves further into institutional maturity, driven entirely by its current executive structure rather than its founding leadership.
