Terra Industries, a fast-rising Nigerian defence technology startup, has announced plans that signal a major leap for Africa’s drone industry: the development of what it describes as the continent’s largest drone. The move underscores a broader ambition to position Africa as a serious player in global unmanned aerial systems manufacturing.
Terra Industries has already made headlines with the launch of what is considered Africa’s largest drone production facility near Abuja. The factory, spanning about 15,000 square feet, is capable of producing up to 30,000 drones annually, reflecting the company’s aggressive scaling strategy.
The company’s latest project—building Africa’s largest drone—fits into its wider vision of creating a vertically integrated defence ecosystem. Rather than relying heavily on foreign suppliers, Terra designs and manufactures much of its hardware and software in-house, including airframes, batteries, and its proprietary AI platform, ArtemisOS. This system enables real-time surveillance, threat detection, and coordinated response, making the drones suitable for securing critical infrastructure such as power plants, mines, and oil facilities.
Terra’s push into large-scale drone development is also driven by Africa’s unique security and infrastructure challenges. Across the continent, industries face threats ranging from theft and vandalism to insurgency. By building locally adapted drones, the company aims to provide solutions tailored to African terrain and operational realities—something foreign technologies have often struggled to achieve.
Another key selling point is cost. Terra claims its drones can be up to 55% cheaper than imported alternatives, lowering the barrier to adoption for governments and private sector clients. This affordability, combined with a growing list of contracts and deployments across multiple countries, has helped the startup gain traction despite relatively modest funding.
However, challenges remain. Scaling production, maintaining quality, and supporting software infrastructure across regions with uneven connectivity could test the company’s capabilities. Still, Terra Industries’ bold bet on building Africa’s largest drone reflects a broader shift: the continent is no longer just a consumer of advanced technology, but an emerging निर्माता shaping its own technological future.
