The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has increased the cost of checking UTME results via SMS, raising the service fee from ₦50 to ₦100. The adjustment represents a 100% increase and applies to candidates using the official result-checking shortcodes.
The SMS result service remains one of the primary channels used by candidates to access their examination outcomes. Users are required to send “UTMERESULT” to designated shortcodes such as 55019 or 66019 using the phone number registered during their examination process.
The change comes during the ongoing 2026 UTME result release cycle, when candidates across Nigeria are retrieving their scores in batches. The SMS option continues to serve as a fast and widely accessible method of result delivery, particularly in areas with limited internet access.
While the adjustment does not affect access to results, it has drawn attention due to the sudden increase in cost for a widely used public service. The SMS system remains a key part of JAMB’s digital result distribution process, helping reduce pressure on physical and online result-checking channels.
The development adds to ongoing discussions around the cost of examination-related services in Nigeria. As digital systems become more integrated into public examination processes, affordability and accessibility continue to shape public response to policy adjustments by examination bodies.
