The Central African Republic has moved to clamp down on the unauthorized use and resale of Starlink internet services, targeting a growing grey market that has emerged around satellite connectivity in the country.
SpaceX’s Starlink service was originally designed to expand broadband access in underserved regions, but in markets like the Central African Republic, limited official distribution channels have led to informal imports and reselling of terminals. Authorities now say these parallel channels are operating outside regulatory approval and tax frameworks.
The government’s enforcement action focuses on unlicensed distributors and users operating Starlink equipment without formal authorization. Officials argue that while satellite internet can help bridge connectivity gaps, it must be deployed within regulated structures to ensure compliance with national telecom laws and security oversight.
The rise of grey-market usage reflects broader demand pressures in the country, where traditional broadband infrastructure remains limited or unreliable.
