Globacom Records Highest Internet Subscriber Gain

Globacom emerged as the leading performer in Nigeria’s internet market in May, recording the highest growth in internet subscribers among the country’s major telecommunications operators. The latest industry data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) highlights the company’s strong momentum as competition intensifies in Africa’s largest telecom market and demand for reliable internet connectivity continues to rise.

The increase in Globacom’s subscriber base reflects the growing appetite for mobile broadband services across Nigeria. Consumers are increasingly relying on internet access for remote work, online education, digital banking, entertainment, e-commerce, and social media. As a result, telecom operators are investing heavily in network expansion, capacity upgrades, and improved service quality to attract and retain customers.

Although MTN remains the largest operator by overall internet subscriber numbers, Globacom’s performance in May demonstrates its ability to capture a larger share of new internet users. Industry analysts attribute the growth to the company’s competitive data offerings, wider network reach, and efforts to improve customer experience. The company has also continued to strengthen its broadband infrastructure to meet increasing demand for faster and more reliable internet services.

The NCC data also indicates that Nigeria’s internet subscriber base continues to expand steadily, reflecting the country’s ongoing digital transformation. Rising smartphone adoption, increased availability of affordable data-enabled devices, and greater dependence on digital services have all contributed to sustained growth in internet usage. Government initiatives aimed at boosting broadband penetration have further supported the expansion of connectivity nationwide.

The growth in internet subscriptions comes alongside record levels of data consumption. Nigerians are using more online services than ever before, with streaming platforms, video conferencing, online gaming, cloud applications, and digital financial services driving higher data traffic across mobile networks. This trend underscores the critical role telecommunications companies play in supporting economic activities and digital inclusion.

Despite the positive outlook, the telecom industry continues to face several challenges, including rising operational costs, infrastructure vandalism, foreign exchange pressures, and the need for continuous investment in network infrastructure. Addressing these issues will be essential for sustaining subscriber growth and improving service quality as demand for high-speed internet continues to increase.

Globacom’s strong performance in May signals that competition in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector remains vibrant. As operators continue to invest in network expansion and innovative digital services, consumers are expected to benefit from improved connectivity, broader coverage, and enhanced service offerings. With internet access becoming increasingly central to education, commerce, healthcare, and governance, sustained subscriber growth represents an important milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward a more connected and digitally driven economy.
