Xara and Flutterwave Boost WhatsApp Banking

Nigerian fintech startup Xara is partnering with Flutterwave to strengthen the payment infrastructure behind its WhatsApp-based banking platform. The collaboration is designed to help Xara scale its conversational banking service while making digital financial services easier to access for Nigerians who may face barriers with traditional banking applications.

Xara, developed by Xava Technologies, allows customers to perform financial transactions directly through WhatsApp. Instead of downloading and navigating a separate banking application, users can send messages, voice notes or images to instruct the AI assistant to send money, pay bills, schedule payments and manage their finances. The platform also supports business users through Xara for Business.

The partnership addresses a major challenge that emerged as Xara expanded: fragmented payment infrastructure. The company previously relied on multiple providers for services including wallets, transfers, airtime purchases and bill payments. Managing different application programming interfaces created additional engineering, reconciliation and reliability challenges.

By integrating Flutterwave’s payment rails and Microfinance Bank services, Xara is consolidating these functions through a more unified infrastructure. According to Flutterwave, Xara customers can securely access their Flutterwave MFB accounts through WhatsApp, while the integration supports payment methods including cards, bank transfers and USSD through a single API.

For Xara, the move could be particularly important as its customer base grows. The company says it now serves more than 55,000 users and businesses. Supporting that scale requires payment infrastructure that can handle increasing transaction volumes while maintaining reliability and accurate reconciliation.

The partnership also reinforces Xara’s broader financial-inclusion strategy. WhatsApp is already familiar to millions of Nigerians, meaning users do not have to learn a new financial interface before accessing services. Xara’s ability to process natural-language instructions, voice notes and images further reduces the steps involved in completing everyday transactions.

Language accessibility is another part of the company’s approach. Xara supports English and Nigerian Pidgin, with additional local-language capabilities highlighted as part of its effort to reach underserved communities. This combination of familiar technology and conversational interaction could make digital banking more accessible to users who are less comfortable with conventional financial applications.

For Flutterwave, the partnership provides another opportunity to demonstrate how its payment infrastructure can support emerging fintech products. Rather than building every component internally, startups can use established payment rails to focus on their customer experience and specialised services.

The collaboration ultimately reflects a wider evolution in African fintech: financial services are increasingly moving beyond traditional apps and into platforms consumers already use every day. Xara brings the conversational interface, while Flutterwave provides the underlying payment infrastructure.

If the integration performs as intended, the partnership could allow Xara to process more transactions, introduce additional financial services and expand its reach without the infrastructure complexity that previously accompanied its growth.
