OpenAI began rollout GTP-6 Astra, its latest and most capable AI model on September 3. The model has deliver a stronger performance across, coding, computer use, scientific work and complex multi-step tasks.
Astra is particularly significant because OpenAI says it is first of its model to reach the “Critical” level for cybersecurity capability under the Preparedness Framework. This also means the model can assist with sophisticated cyber operations, to increase the usefulness and the risk associated in deploying it.
Also Uber, the ride-hailing company announced plans to eliminate approximately 3,300 jobs, representing around 10% of its workforce and its largest workforce reduction since the pandemic.
The cuts come as Uber faces competition from autonomous vehicle-companies and prepare to invest heavily in driverless transportation. The restructuring makes Uber’s attempts to position itself for a transportation market increasingly shaped by AI.
The announcement has an additional impact on Africa. Uber says it would cease operations in Nigeria and Uganda, making the week’s announcement particularly significant for the region’s mobility and gig economic.
This week also delivered an unexpected update in the relationship between AI companies and the governments. A US federal judge ruled that the Pentagon’s decision to blacklist Anthropic was unlawful.
