Mavin’s new executive advise Artists to embrace AI

As artificial intelligence changes the music industry worldwide, including AI-generated vocals and virtual idols, Nigeria’s music scene is slow to adapt.Despite being Africa’s top music market, few Nigerian artists and producers are using AI tools, which risks their global cultural influence in the long run.

Nigeria’s music industry makes over $2 billion annually and has significantly contributed to the rise of Afrobeats. However, the adoption of AI in its creative processes remains low. This is due to inadequate investment in data centers, computing power, and internet infrastructure, creating a gap between creativity and technology in the region.

Nkasiobi Chukwu, who created Africa’s first fully AI-assisted Afrobeats album in 2023, notes both structural and emotional reasons for this slow adoption. He expresses frustration over the limited number of Nigerian artists using AI, despite its benefits in reducing production time and costs.

Reluctance to embrace AI comes from fears, misunderstandings, and traditional views of artistic authenticity. Many Nigerian musicians worry AI cannot capture the emotional depth of their music, which is linked to cultural identity and traditional sounds. While this perspective is understandable, it may hinder progress.

In other African countries, creators are using AI to enhance their music.Platforms like Spotify and Boomplay are utilizing AI to promote African music globally, with some Nigerian artists seeing significant growth in their streams. These advances show how AI can open doors for new creative opportunities.
