The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved financing of up to $10 million for Nigerian energy technology company Beacon Power Services (BPS), supporting a $20.9 million project aimed at modernising electricity distribution and improving grid efficiency across Nigeria.
The project will support the deployment of smart meters, grid management software and digital metering solutions across six of Nigeria’s 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos). An additional $7.5 million is expected from a parallel financing facility, while equity contributions will cover the remaining project costs.
The investment comes as Nigeria continues to struggle with electricity distribution losses, inaccurate billing and inadequate metering infrastructure. These challenges have weakened the financial position of distribution companies, limiting their ability to invest in network improvements and deliver more reliable services to customers.
Beacon Power Services develops digital solutions that help electricity utilities monitor their networks, identify operational problems and improve revenue collection. Its technology combines data analytics, smart metering and network management tools to provide utilities with better visibility into electricity consumption and distribution.
Through the project, participating DisCos are expected to improve billing accuracy, identify losses more effectively and strengthen payment collection. Better access to electricity consumption data could also help customers understand their bills and reduce disputes over estimated charges.
Nigeria’s metering gap remains a significant obstacle to electricity sector reform. According to figures reported by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, approximately 4.7 million active electricity customers remained without meters as of August 2026. Many unmetered households and businesses depend on estimated billing, which can generate disputes and weaken trust between customers and distribution companies.
Smart meters can help address some of these problems by recording actual electricity consumption. When combined with digital management systems, they can also help utilities detect irregularities, improve network planning and make better decisions about maintenance and infrastructure investment.
For Beacon Power Services, the financing represents an opportunity to expand its presence in Nigeria’s electricity market while demonstrating how technology can improve the performance of essential infrastructure.
The project also reflects the EBRD’s expanding involvement in Nigeria following the country’s inclusion as a country of operation in 2025. The bank has identified sustainable infrastructure and private-sector development as important areas of engagement in the country.
However, technology alone will not resolve Nigeria’s electricity challenges. Successful implementation will depend on effective coordination with distribution companies, reliable equipment deployment, data protection and the ability of utilities to translate improved information into operational changes.
The Beacon Power Services project could provide a model for using private-sector technology and development finance to strengthen electricity distribution. If implemented effectively, it could improve revenue collection, reduce avoidable losses and support a more financially sustainable power sector.
For Nigerian consumers and businesses, the long-term test will be whether these improvements lead to more transparent billing, better service delivery and a more reliable electricity supply.
